I’m supposed to be writing something else right now, but my brain won’t stop circling back to the thought of authors who just get moments oh so right. The ones whose scenes reach out and touch your heartbrain all over, all at once submersing you into their fictional reality and your real memory.
This may or may not have everything to do with the fact that I’m reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan – two of heartbrain touching authors who always get it right and who came together to pen one superb piece of YA literature as only they can.
My favorite characters are the ones that feel a little too much, the ones that live not quite so boldly yet are brave, the ones whose angst is truly painful instead of just irksome – basically, the ones I see myself in, and who make me feel like they’re part of me and I’m part of them and we’re going to get through this whole life thing together because we’re all living it the same way, even if they’re not real.
So I’m going to share a short list of those authors right this second. And then, I invite you to tell me yours!
Rainbow Rowell (Read Eleanor and Park)
Jandy Nelson (Read The Sky is Everywhere)
Paul Murray (Read Skippy Dies)
David Levithan (Read The Lover’s Dictionary)
Meg Rosoff (Read How I Live Now)
John Green (Read Looking for Alaska)
Megan Mccafferty (Read Sloppy Firsts (and if you don’t want to read Second Comings, I’d be surprised))
Sarah Dessen (Read Someone Like You)
Kristen Randel (Read The Only Alien on the Planet)
Dodie Smith (Read I Capture the Castle)
As promised, I now cordially and welcomingly invite you to tell me your favorite heartbrain authors and books!
